The Chicago Skyliners were a charter member of the ABA and had a fine season. The team didn't lose back-to-back games until the final week of the season. The team's first playoff opponent would be San Diego and the Skyliners had not lost to San Diego all season. Chicago wound up in the championship game and after winning three of the four regular season meetings with Detroit, lost by 16. The Skyliners returned for the 2001-2002 season but folded after seven blowout losses . The team was replaced midseason by the Las Vegas Slam.
